“As students develop their linguistic, cultural, and global competence, they build capacity to suspend assumptions, consider multiple perspectives and opinions, and empathize with others.” -- Chapter 8 World Language Framework Teaching the Connections Chapter

The connections standards center around the notion that language learners will be able to take advantage of their learning of culture and communications in order to see and build connections both within and throughout their heritage language as well as the language that they’re studying. Critical competencies and deep engagement with the learning of a language will allow students to develop connections within and throughout their academic work whether they are engaged with that work in their heritage language or the language they are learning. By engaging in academic work through multiple languages students are able to develop their linguistic, cultural, and global competence. As these develop language learners will be able to suspend assumptions, consider multiple perspectives and opinions, as well as empathize with others.
