The resources on this web page offer information on the development, implementation, and location of multilingual programs within Riverside County.
Overview of Multilingual Programs
Multilingual programs prepare students for linguistic and academic proficiency in English and additional languages. Multilingual programs are based on research that demonstrates the program model’s effectiveness at leading students toward linguistic fluency and academic achievement in more than one language. – CDE, Multilingual Education
Additionally, The California Education for a Global Economy (CA Ed.G.E.) Initiative ensures that, “all children in California public schools receive the highest quality education, master the English language, and access high-quality, innovative, and research-based language programs that prepare them to fully participate in a global economy.” California Education Code authorizes school districts and county offices of education “to establish language acquisition programs for both native and non-native English speakers, and requires school districts and county offices of education to solicit parent and community input in developing language acquisition programs.” – CDE, CA Education for a Global Economy Initiative
Multilingualism provides educational, cognitive, sociocultural, and economic benefits for those students who attain fluency in more than one language. The mission of California is to equip students with world language skills to better appreciate and more fully engage with the diverse mixture of cultures, heritages, and languages found in California and the world, while also preparing them to succeed in the global economy.
Riverside County Office of Education supports California’s mission by assisting educators and districts in the development and implementation of quality, research-based multilingual programs. Our goal is to promote a mindset around language acquisition that not only recognizes the global marketability of multilingual skill sets but inspires a full appreciation of every language as an asset with the potential for deepening socio-cultural competence, civic engagement, and a positive sense of self.
