RCOE Premieres Videos of Riverside County Teachers of the Year to Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week
Post Date:05/03/2021 12:42 PM
RIVERSIDE – In celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week, the Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) will premiere four videos highlighting the extraordinary work of the 2021 Riverside County Teachers of the Year.
“After such a challenging school year, every teacher deserves an extra measure of appreciation during this week,” said Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Gomez. “Thank you to the nearly 20,000 teachers in Riverside County who have persevered through one of the most demanding assignments this year to maintain their focus on helping students succeed.”
Each day of Teacher Appreciation Week will feature the release of a video honoring the 2021 Riverside County Teachers of the Year on the RCOE YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/RCOETV1).
Monday, May 3 - Anne-Marie Bravo
Railway Elementary School, Perris Elementary School District
Annie’s favorite phrase for her students is “Let me see the fire in your eyes” because it represents how their classroom works. Hard work, determination, goal setting, and working as a team lead to that fire and internal motivation that will allow students to overcome obstacles and persevere not only in the classroom, but also in life. She has created a math escape room to unlock codes through tower building challenges, making slime, canvas art paintings, and working with clay.
Tuesday, May 4 – Krysten Gonda
Desert Mirage High School, Coachella Valley Unified School District
Krysten creates space in her classroom where students can be their authentic selves and push themselves to learn at a high level. She founded a surf club called the East Valley Board Riders. The goal of the Riders is to offer students a chance to broaden their horizons and experience events they deemed impossible. As a result, students have started participating in local government processes, developed relationships with professional athletes, and received worldwide recognition in the surfing world.
Wednesday, May 5 – Allison Cyr Johnson Elementary School, Desert Sands Unified School District
Allison’s favorite school lessons to teach revolve around reading and teaching students about different character traits. The lessons explain how just because students are different with different abilities, it does not make them any less extraordinary. She created the Twenty4Change program, which includes the concept of taking 20 minutes or $20 dollars to change a life. Allison was honored in March as a 2021 California State Teacher of the Year.
Thursday, May 6 – Keisa Brown University Heights Middle School, Riverside Unified School District
Keisa has a mission to empower youth to stay connected to the world in which they live and make it better. She wants her students to have a voice. The desire to learn, speak up, and engage in life as a learner and citizen must transcend the walls of a classroom. She allows students to be heard and aspires them to ignite awareness and change. Keisa was honored in March as a 2021 California State Teacher of the Year.
The Riverside County Teachers of the Year are selected from nearly 20,000 educators in the county. The rigorous application process requires candidates to spend time reflecting on, and carefully defining, their teaching philosophy. The county teachers of the year are selected by a diverse committee of educational professionals and community members. The 2021 Riverside County Teachers of the Year were named in mid-2020 and the 2022 Riverside County Teachers of the Year will be named in late May/early June.
